Record setting snow in Dallas!

Wow! Yesterday, we set historic records in the Dallas area for the most snowfall in a single day! At our home, we saw between 10-12". For Diamond and Blaze, it was Heaven on Earth! Both love to play snowplow with their noses. Diamond plows, then tosses the snow up into the air and eats it. Blaze bulldozes until he can't breathe...and then he looks surprised. For 2 Corgis, this much snow means hopping rather than walking. It also means running and rolling and having great Corgi fun! It sort of makes walks worthwhile for us humans!

Three tired dogs

Thad and I went to his sister's ranch in East Texas for the weekend. Diamond and Blaze spent the weekend at Doggie Zen Den...their first time boarding. Once we all got home and settled in for the Super Bowl, I look over to see my three tired dogs lined up on the sofa! LOL! ...and I love all three of them!

There's one in every crowd...

You know the one...the kid who takes all of the toys and just will not share. In our home, it's Diamond. Lucky for her, Blaze really doesn't care (and we've got a secret stash of toys for just the time when this happens! LOL!).

This little girl has 4 (count them...4) toys tucked up next to her. And she put them there all by her little self. Sigh...

Christmas for Corgis!

After watching Blaze and Diamond negotiate over the very small bed that was originally purchased for a tiny little Blaze, Santa brought them a wonderful large bed. Honestly, I thought that Diamond would keep the bed she "borrowed" from Blaze and he would be comfy cozy in this one. I should have known better! When it comes to Diamond, what is hers is hers and what is his is hers, too! For now, they are sharing...almost!

Oh, Christmas Tree...

Blaze and Diamond have decided they like the Christmas tree. Diamond will lay right below it, gazing up at the lights in the evenings for hours. There is a little gold-toned bell on the bottom branch that she almost always taps as she goes by. Every time, I think to myself: "An angel gets his wings."
Blaze, on the other hand, just likes to be near it...just like in this photo. I didn't even realize he was there until I uploaded the photos. His favorite ornament? A big, red jingle bell. Once a day, he sticks his nose just above the lower branches and moves it. It jingles, he jumps, all is well in the world!

Snow very tired!

It snowed this morning in Dallas. Really. Lots of big, fluffy flakes covering the ground and the cars. The kind that settle on the backs of little dogs as they walk.

Diamond was so very funny! This was her first snow. She tried to eat it all as she went on her morning walk.

Blaze wanted out on the balcony to check it out first. He hopped up on the ottoman and caught snowflakes with his mouth. Oh, I wish I had gotten to the camera in time! Then we went out on our walk. He thought he was a bull-dozer, nose down and plowing through the cold white snow on the ground.

Now...well...they are tired. Snow very tired!! LOL!

A Cold Morning in Texas

It's the coldest morning in Texas this fall...and where is Blaze? Lying on "his" ottoman on the balcony. Outside. With the door open about 4 inches. In case he wants to come inside.

Where is Diamond? Underneath my chair. Looking at me...almost as if to say, "Are you crazy? Go close the door!"

I don't think he's coming back inside any time soon.

A Day at the Ranch...

We spent the last two days at my sister-in-law's ranch in East Texas. It was Blaze and Diamond's first trip to the ranch! She has Golden Retrievers, and it just seemed perfect to bring our two little beasts. After some trepidation on my part, Blaze and Diamond spent the entire morning off leash...running with her younger Golden, checking out her pond and boat, and just exploring the world. Such fun! Diamond had her first swim in the pond. Blaze isn't as big a fan of being in the water as Diamond!

This afternoon, they slept all the way back home (2 hours). After a quick walk, Diamond has sacked out in her crate (and dared anyone to bother her!) and Blaze is just mellowed out on the sofa. I just looked over and he is chewing his rawhide with his eyes closed! LOL!

A perfect Corgi day!

A lazy Sunday...

I can't believe it has been so long since I posted!

Since the last post, we've been dealing with a change in Doggy Day Care to one that is a little more in-tune with little Corgis that are still puppies and very much herding dogs. In other words, they bark and they chase. A lot. And all day. If it runs, they will chase it. If it barks, they will bark back. Duh!

Now I have two very happy little Doggie Zen Den attendees! As you can see, Blaze is resting up today (LOL!). So is Diamond, but she is not in a very photogenic pose.

This is Diamond's "growing month". As with Blaze, when Corgis hit 7 months of age, they grow almost every day it seems. I've been tempted to measure her before she goes to bed at night and again every morning...it seems she just gets bigger! Some days, she doesn't want to eat; she would prefer to sleep all day. After Blaze, I know it is just normal so I go with the flow!

Blaze is nearly a year old now, and he is really making progress in training. I'm not really sure if it is the age or just to show up Diamond. Either way, I'm loving it!!

Run, Blaze, Run...

For the past several months, we thought that Blaze loses his mind when Thad comes home each day because he is excited to see him. After all, I can come home from shopping and you'd think I never left!

The drill each day is that Blaze and Diamond hear the garage door start to open, Blaze runs down the stairs and attacks Thad with barks and loves and jumps and kisses. He's tried ignoring the behavior, praising calmness, putting him in a "sit"...all with very minimal success. So we thought he should try coming in the front door. Same results.

Today, we discovered this is a diversionary tactic. Blaze wants out. He has been waiting for that perfect moment to catch Thad off guard in order to run past him at half the speed of sound. Today he did it.

Run, Blaze, run. See Thad run. See Thad yell: "Stop, Blaze, stop!" See Blaze look over his shoulder and keep running...right around the side of the building to the garage door and Thad's car. I put a leash on Diamond and took her out as "bait" (where there is Diamond, there is Blaze) to find out all of this. Blaze is sitting by the back car door of Thad's car...waiting.

I think he wanted to go to Doggy Day Care...or the off-leash dog park.

Note to self: Don't leave the car keys within Blaze's reach. Just in case.

Silly things my Corgis do...

This morning, I realize that these two little Corgis have some strange (and not-so-strange) habits and rituals!

Diamond has decided that two king size sheets, placed in a mushed-up pile next to her "real" doggy bed, make a much better place to sleep.

On mornings when it has been raining or she manages to get a little too wet from where the sprinklers ran overnight, I wrap her up in a towel and sit at the computer with her all wrapped up. I slowly dry her paws and belly. NOW she thinks this should happen each and every morning...even when it is dry. And only on the first walk of the day...no others. She wants to be wrapped up in a towel and sit on my lap at the computer.

But, before we go on said first walk of the morning, I have to sit on the ottoman and put on my shoes. While this happens, Diamond jumps up on the ottoman, stands on her back legs, and places both front paws on the top of my head. If she REALLY wants me to hurry, I get kisses on my neck in addition! But, again, this is ONLY on the first walk of the day!

Did I mention that Diamond likes rawhides? But only the ones that Blaze has pre-chewed for her...the soft, icky, sticky ones. And she usually wants them while he is still chewing them. But that's okay, because she is willing to give him her hard rawhide with very little wear. Isn't that a good trade? LOL!

Blaze has his own little habits. He figured out that Thad calls before he comes home. So, when the phone rings (and every time the phone rings), he barks at it and runs to me...just so I know to answer it. When I hang up, he runs to the garage door and sits. And sits. And sits. Sometimes I have to tell him that no one is coming right now. He rarely believes me.

Blaze has to have nighttime cuddles. It's our fault. When he was an "only puppy", we would put him in the bed for about 15 minutes before crating him for the night. If we miss those 15 minutes, he will sit in his crate and bark and cry. So, we go and get him, cuddle, put him back in the crate, and absolutely no noise do we hear. Spoiled puppy!

Lord, what was I thinking?!

In my no-so-infinite wisdom, I thought it would be a great idea to have Blaze neutered and Diamond spayed at the same time. We did it two days ago, on Monday. At this point, let me say that I AM glad that it is done. Once they are all healed and stitches removed, they can romp and play at Doggy Daycare and the off-leash park with abandon. Unfortunately for me, my little dream of show dogs is gone. I've resolved it with the fact that it is more important they they be happy puppies. Going to Doggy Daycare and interacting with other dogs makes them happy. I just don't think being a part of a dog show would have even stacked up!

On the other hand, I had expected that Diamond would have issues. She is such a rambunctious puppy, I thought that keeping her quiet would be as big a challenge as keeping her from chewing at her stitches. Blaze, on the other hand, would surely be a piece of cake.

NOT!

Diamond has been a breeze. No chewing. No whining. Quick healing. Sleeps most of the day.

Blaze. OMG! We've had to put a cone on him because of all of his frantic chewing at stitches, which he dearly hates. He wants to jump, but (of course) he can't. We have stairs...lots of them. Even taking them outside requires carrying them up and down stairs. Blaze, at nearly 25 pounds, is quite the handful (armful!). We have them crated at night. Blaze can't get comfortable with the cone on night. I got three hours of sleep the first night before giving up and staying up at 3 a.m. Last night was almost as bad...to bed at midnight, up at 3:30, and then up for good at 5 a.m. This morning, I was able to leave his cone off for a few hours while he slept (all 25 pounds of him) in my lap.

Diamond came up and joined him...nothing better than 40+ pounds of puppies sleeping in your lap at 5:30 in the morning.

I hope they feel better soon!

Best friends

It is really hard to tell sometimes, but Blaze and Diamond truly are best friends! We have two of these funky footballs...one red and one yellow. Both were purchased before Diamond came into our home. Blaze never really cared for them unless, of course, you threw one for him to bring back. Diamond, on the other hand, has adopted the red one. She sleeps on it, drools on it, chews gently on it, and squeaks the heck out of it. So NOW Blaze wants it. And he takes it, much to Diamond's dismay.

8.04.2009

Five months old

It's official! Diamond is 5 months old. She has grown so very much since we got her 6 weeks ago...from just under 10 pounds to a perfect 16 pounds! Yes, I'm 5 months old she says. Leave me the heck alone...

A day in the sun

It's just too hot during a summer in Dallas for much outdoor play for two puppies. We even have to be cautious of where we walk them due to their indoor-puppy soft paw pads! They love sunbeams (reminds me of a cartoon when I was much younger...where a little baby would talk to Sunbeam and made it her friend). During the mornings, I open the blinds. Not long after, I'll find Blaze and Diamond laying in their own personal sun-spot.

A lazy day in the life of Blaze and Diamond

It's been a lazy day...or at least a lazy afternoon. I sat down and drifted off to sleep after spending the morning on some housework and errands. I woke up to find that Diamond (who had been asleep all curled up in "her" doggy bed) had somehow spilled out of her bed onto the floor. And she seemed quite content to have done so! Blaze was sleeping quietly on the ottoman at my feet. I had to snap a pic of Diamond. I looked over at Blaze, only to get the "I was watching TV until you started with that camera-look"! LOL!

7.27.2009

Puppy Innocence

It's raining in Texas today. I had forgotten how long it had been since we've last had rain until I took Diamond out in the rain. I grabbed her leash and a big green umbrella and off we went. I laughed so hard when we started down the sidewalk and she was so interested in this big green umbrella over my head! She just kept tripping over herself trying to keep an eye on it! I laughed the entire way.

On another upside, Blaze is healing nicely. He has a scar on his bottom eyelid, but everything else seems to be healing well...including his feelings!

7.25.2009

The healing

I'm so very happy that I took Blaze to the vet. He is healing wonderfully thanks, no doubt, to the care and medication he received. Halfway through the antibiotics, he is now off of the pain medication. He and Diamond are back to playing again, but I have to watch to make sure it doesn't get too rambunctious. He is sensitive about that side of his face, but I don't blame him. I'm just pleased that Blaze is getting well!

7.22.2009

A hurt for the heart

I took Blaze to doggy day care yesterday, one of his favorite things in the world. Each day as Thad leaves for work, Blaze gets excited and waits by the door...hoping that this will be a doggy day care day. We do it so that he can play and socialize with other dogs for 1/2 day about twice a week.

I picked him up at 2, only to find he had just been "bitten" by another dog. It didn't look too bad, but I called the vet to see what I should do. Within 2 hours, his face was swollen and still bleeding a bit more than I felt comfortable with at the time. I took him to the vet. She found 2 puncture wounds in his jaw (she had to shave the side of him face so that we could care for it and monitor for infection) and a slice to his lower eyelid. The good news is that his cornea does not appear damaged.

The bad news is that it hurts...lots. Poor little Blaze keeps pawing at it. He's on painkillers, antibiotics, and an antibiotic eye ointment. I have to press on the most serious puncture wound several times a day to make sure it drains, clean it with hydrogen peroxide, and cover with an ointment. The shaved area makes him look so pitiful. And Diamond doesn't know what to do! She knows he is hurt. But they still want to play. Unfortunately, I can't let them right now...and it's driving them both nuts.

So, here I sit with two puppies separated in crates whining to play with each other. The whole thing just hurts my heart.

7.20.2009

Why can't he share?

I just know that is what Diamond is thinking! I was working at the computer when I heard a different kind of bark from her. It was short and sharp and pitiful. Translated, I now know she was saying, "Mommmmmmmm, make Blaze share!" As I look over, Blaze has taken over the smaller dog bed. He has left poor little Diamond out in the cold. I laugh, tell her she'll have to work that one out on her own. A few minutes later, this is what I find! She's cuddled as close as she can get, seemingly happy to just be close to her bed...and Blaze.
